Summer is here and most people can not wait to get away. No matter what you have planned, here are some friendly tips to keep you fit and healthy during your summer vacation.
1. Get Outdoors
Don’t forget to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Even on overcast days, UV rays can penetrate clouds. Follow CDC guidelines for sunscreen: use broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 15 SPF and reapply every 2 hours.
2. Sunscreen Is Essential
Dress comfortably but protectively. Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and closed-toe shoes to shield yourself from scratches, insect bites, and sun exposure. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen!
3. Stay Hydrated
Dehydration is a risk during hot summer days. Aim to drink enough water – men should have 13 cups, and women should have 9 cups daily. In extreme heat, drink one cup (8 oz.) every 15 to 20 minutes. Avoid energy drinks and alcohol, which can dehydrate you.
4. Try New Activities
Whether you’re traveling or having a “staycation,” explore new activities. Consider beach volleyball, swimming, hiking, or jogging in a new city. Make fitness fun by incorporating it into your summer adventures.
5. Walk Before You Fly
If you have layovers at airports, walk around instead of sitting. Sightsee by bicycle if your destination has bike paths. Trying something new keeps you active and engaged.
6. Plan an Active Vacation
Choose destinations that allow for physical activity. Explore local trails, swim, or participate in water sports. Pack healthy snacks to keep your energy up during your adventures.
Remember, staying fit and healthy doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be an enjoyable part of your summer experience.
