School Backpack Tips and Tricks

Can you believe we are already nearing the end of summer? In a few short weeks, our kids will be gearing up and headed back to the classrooms. Some estimates suggest that 20% of kids will experience back pain throughout the school year. Poorly fitting backpacks and poor posture in the school setting are the most common reasons why. Here are a few tips and tricks to help our kids avoid any back pains when returning to school:

  • 1) Wear both straps evenly over the shoulders and arrange the backpack so it rests evenly in the middle of the back. Uneven distribution of the backpack over one shoulder or in the lower back causes postural compensation and spinal stress.
  • 2) Keep the load of the backpack to 10-15% of your child's weight. That means a 100 lb child should be carrying a backpack that weighs less than 15 lbs!
  • 3) Organize the heaviest items closest to the back. This will keep the weight closest to your child's center of gravity and minimize the potential for injury.
  • 4) Only carry the items that are necessary for the school day. That might mean rearranging the backpack prior to the next school day or utilizing a locker in the school. This will also help keep the weight of the backpack down.
  • 5) Encourage your child to avoid slouching when sitting in the classroom or when using technology. Slouching posture creates a lot of spinal and muscular stress in the neck and upper back which could lead to pain, headaches, and difficulty sleeping.
  • 6) Sleep is paramount to recovery and staying healthy. Be sure your child is getting the recommended 9-12 hours of sleep per day (8-10 hours for teens).
